“Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you” must have been going through Ron Waterman's mind moments after his win over Mark “The Bear” Smith Saturday night. Overcoming Smith's near 70 pound weight advantage Waterman forced a tapout by arm triangle choke at 2:16 of the second round.
Round one was all boxing. Smith landed several jabs, opening a split on Waterman's lower lip, but doing no real damage. None of his haymakers found their mark, whistling past as Waterman easily evaded the big shots and landing many of his own combinations winning the 1st round handily. Waterman danced, controlling the pace, but by the end of the round the crowd was restless, wanting to see the fighters engage. Smith who trained sea level in California, was running on low in the thin air of Loveland, Colorado.
Round two was more of the same, and two minutes in the crowd was getting loud. Frustrated, Smith abandoned his plan to punish Waterman into a takedown attempt, broke off boxing and took the shot himself, coming in low and fast. Waterman sprawled, dragged Smith to the ground with him, and landed in side mount. With his head pressed into Smith's back Waterman locked on the arm triangle choke that ended the fight giving the H20man his 16th professional win.
